The Training Choir runs concurrently with the main National Children's Choir and shares all recreational activities during the course. Each probationary member is expected to stay with this group for the two courses in their first year of membership. Particular attention is given to sight-reading capabilities and the members choose from one of five groups according to their perceived ability. They are free to move between groups when they feel it appropriate. The Main Choir sings every type of music with composers ranging from classical to modern. Jazz improvisation and African tribal songs are also part of the repertoire as are Madrigals and Musicals. The choir is often divided into smaller chamber ensembles for ‘a cappella’ work. This means that there maybe only one or two voices to a part, which teaches confidence in pitch and musical self-reliance together with an ability to listen to each other. There is a boys choir with members taken from both the probationary and main choir and a girls choir which is mainly for older members. Other than the concerts, the cabaret evening is the highlight of the week, together with the lunchtime recital. Children are encouraged to prepare a solo or a duet piece. A representative selection from these is performed in the final concert at the end of the week for the parents and local audience. In 2005 a new choir, Dulce Corum, was formed. This choir consists of past members of the NCC and is upper voices. The age range is 15 years upwards. Membership is by invitation. The National Children’s Choir is extremely grateful to its sponsors, particularly the Early Learning Centre who contributed enormously in the first two years of the Choir’s existence. The Choir is particularly grateful to AT&T who recently sponsored the Choir during their tour of Australia & New Zealand. The Choir also hopes that it can commission new works from both established and new composers, which will then be included on future CDs. |
